Happy Feast of All Saints!
All Saints or All Hallows Day is a time for us in the Church Militant on earth to honour the canonized saints and all those unknown saints who make up the Church Triumphant in Heaven. We also honour and pray for the Holy Souls of Purgatory who make up the Church Suffering.
Originally a time to celebrate the Martyrs during the persecution of the early Christians, Pope Gregory III transferred the Feast to November 1st with the foundation of a new chapel at St. Peter's Basilica dedicated to all the saints. Pope Gregory IV extended the Feast beyond Rome to the Universal Church in the 9th century.
On this Holy Day of Obligation, we can honour the saints beyond assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
1. The Rosary
The Rosary is our most powerful weapon against the devil and the ways of the world. What better way to honour the saints than by striving to become a saint ourselves, through the intercession of the greatest saint, our Mother Mary!
2. Novenas
If you are like me then you often forget to start a novena until it is already the feast day. Start one today anyway. Your patron saints want you to pray for their intercession now, not only certain days set aside for novenas. And All Saint Day is a perfect day to begin praying with your favourite saint.
3. Quick Prayers for the Dead
There are many quick prayers you can say during the month of November and beyond for the dead. Whenever I pass a church, hospital, and cemetery I like to pray "May the souls of the faithful departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace."
Other prayers include:
Jesus and Mary, save souls!
Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy Mercy.
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
4. Wish everyone a happy feast day!
At the office, classroom, or grocery school, let everyone know that today is a holiday! You might be nervous at first, but this is a great way to evangelize and further build the community of saints. A simple "Happy All Saints Day" will suffice. Or you can research more about the holy day and educate your coworkers and friends, or even share how your patron saint has helped you grow in times of trouble.
November is a time for memento mori, to remember our death. We are not made of this world; we are made for Heaven and Love Eternal. God our Father has gifted us with the ability to communicate with our friends in Heaven, a gift we should not take for granted. Use the gift of the Saints today and be encouraged that you too can make it to Heaven!
