Becoming Catholic

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults  OCIA
(Formerly known as RCIA)

Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Are you answering a call to become Catholic but are not sure how or where to begin? If you are, please consider attending the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). OCIA is a faith journey by which inquirers prepare to become Catholic or finish their initiation into the Catholic Church. The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. OCIA is the process of discerning one’s readiness for this commitment. OCIA provides instruction that covers all major aspects of the Catholic Faith, an opportunity to ask questions about the Faith, and a parish community who will support you on your journey.

The OCIA process if for:

  • Those who have never been baptized (Includes children aged 7 years and older who have never been baptized)
  • Those who have been baptized in another Christian faith and seek to join the Catholic Church
  • Those who have been baptized Catholic but have not received the remaining Sacraments of Initiation (First Holy Communion and Confirmation)
The OCIA process entails:
  • Deepening your knowledge and faith in Jesus Christ through Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and Prayer
  • Attending Mass and learning about and participating in Catholic devotions and prayers
  • Learning what the Catholic Church believes and teaches about God, the Church, and living as a Catholic
  • Understanding the Creed and preparing to profess it
  • Being a part of a parish community through praying together, attending parish events, and volunteering with fellow parishioners.
