This document appeals for faith and philosophy to recover their harmonious unity without comprising their mutual autonomy--without reason, faith leads to superstition; without faith, reason leads to nihilism and relativism. John Paul II states that modern philosophy has taken wrong turns and that it is the Magisterium's responsibility to respond when controversial philosophical opinions threaten the understanding of revelation and confuse the faith of God's people.
